Hanging Drying is one of the traditional yet still highly effective methods in Iran’s leather industry, used to remove residual moisture from leather after previous stages such as vacuum drying or setting out. This method involves suspending hides in drying chambers with controlled temperature, and due to its positive impact on the shape, texture, and final quality of leather, it continues to be widely employed in many professional and export-oriented production units.
In this process, hides are hung vertically using special clips on rails or movable racks inside the drying chamber. Within the chamber, warm air with carefully regulated temperature and relative humidity circulates evenly. The vertical suspension of the hides minimizes deformation or wrinkling of their structure, ensuring that the leather surface remains smooth and uniform.
Hanging drying is particularly important during cold or humid seasons, when natural drying conditions are unsuitable. This method not only ensures complete removal of internal moisture but also preserves the natural grain and surface quality of leather. The gradual drying process further contributes to the long-lasting softness, suppleness, and fiber strength of the leather, making it ideal for producing luxury products such as leather garments, furniture, automotive upholstery, and high-quality accessories.
The duration of drying, airflow intensity, and chamber temperature are adjusted according to the type of leather (cow, goat, sheep, or buffalo) and its thickness. Adhering to these settings ensures that the leather is not only ready for final operations such as fatliquoring, oiling, and surface finishing, but also retains its durability and aesthetic quality for years to come.
Key characteristics of the hanging drying process in Iran’s leather industry:
- Vertical suspension of hides for uniform and natural drying
- Use of controlled warm-air chambers to accelerate the process
- Preservation of shape, natural grain, and structural integrity of the leather
- Suitable for maintaining softness and premium surface quality
- Effective in cold or humid climates where natural drying is difficult
