Vacuum Drying is one of the specialized and advanced methods used in Iran’s leather industry to rapidly reduce moisture while simultaneously smoothing the leather surface. This process plays a critical role in improving dimensional stability, texture uniformity, and the overall quality of leather. It is particularly suitable for delicate or sensitive leathers that may be damaged by conventional drying methods.

After processes such as dyeing and setting out, leather still retains a certain amount of moisture that must be removed in a controlled and uniform way. During the vacuum drying stage, hides are placed between heated metal plates inside a vacuum chamber. When the vacuum system is activated, the pressure difference causes the moisture within the leather fibers to be extracted evenly, without the need for intense heat. This method not only saves energy but also preserves the softness and structural integrity of the leather.

One of the key advantages of vacuum drying is the even smoothing of the leather surface and the elimination of minor wrinkles, resulting in a sleek, luxurious finish. This feature is especially important for thin sheepskins and goatskins used in garments and luxury accessories. In some cases, this method is also applied to recondition dried hides, reactivating their fibers and smoothing their texture before they proceed to the final finishing stages.

The process parameters—including plate temperature, drying duration, and vacuum intensity—are carefully adjusted according to the type, thickness, and intended use of the leather. This ensures optimal results without compromising fiber quality, softness, or tensile strength.

Key characteristics of vacuum drying in Iran’s leather industry:

  • Rapid and uniform moisture extraction using pressure-controlled vacuum systems
  • Gentle, even smoothing of the leather surface for a sleek and luxurious texture
  • Reduced drying time with minimal thermal impact on leather fibers
  • Suitable for wet leathers and, in some cases, for reconditioning dried hides
  • Improved dimensional stability and ideal preparation for final finishing stages
